For a lot of people the heart of a camping trip is the fire, as everyone gathers and another day of adventure draws to a close. It is designed to make it easy to create that great piece of camping tradition. For experienced campers they will more than likely make their own ring by using a shovel to dig a pit and put stones at the edge. Before making any fire local regulations should be adhered to especially in area where forest fires are a dangerous hazard.

At its most basic, a camp fire ring is a circular piece of metal, which will confine the flames a fire to provide safety. These can also be found with much more elaborate designs sometimes including camping sayings about the old traditions of sitting around the old camp fire.

Others incorporate certain cooking facilities and other equipment is also designed to cook food by using the fire of a camp. Portable ones are very useful for those combining walking with camping, as they are very lightweight but still do the job intended. Even static campgrounds will provide rings; in this case, they are usually more heavy duty, often steel. Concrete is a good option for the yard, and will last for very many years as well as being very cheap to make.

One common mistake people make in the winter is eating snow. This isn’t a good thing to do because it takes a lot of energy for the body to transfer water from solid to liquid state. This means you can use up a lot of calories and this could end up in hypothermia. A good way to get water is to dig a hole in frozen streams and lakes that have running water under the ice. But remember, in most instances the water needs to be purified to protect you from bacterial contaminants

You can melt snow on a stove or fire to draw water out of it, but make sure the snow’s clean. If you have a bit of water in the bottom of a container you should heat it up and add the snow to it. On average, to get one quart of water you will need about 10 quarts of snow. The bonus is that clean snow doesn’t need any purification.

To keep the water from freezing, you should put it in a pot and cover it with a lid. Then place the pot in about a foot of snow. The snow is actually an insulator and it should keep the water from completely freezing over. If you carry a water bottle, make sure it has a wide opening at the end instead of just a small spout or hole, as these have a tendency of freezing up.

It is discouraging to walk into a scenic backcountry campsite only to find that others before you have left large, charred logs lying across the fire pit. These types of fires are not all that impressive or warm, plus what they leave behind is ugly and detracts from the aesthetics of the area. The key to a hot, bright and ethically clean campfire lies on the ground under your feet, even at campsites seemingly scavenged of all suitable wood. The reckless fire builder looks for the largest log in the forest. The responsible fire builder looks for small twigs and branches, which are much more abundant and typically overlooked by others.

Smart campfire building begins with the collection of small branches and twigs in three sizes: small, medium and large. Be sure to collect only material already on the ground. Do not cut or break branches from standing or downed trees. The smallest branches and twigs should have a diameter similar to a pencil and be broken into 6″ lengths. These will be used to build the initial pyramid. Branches in the medium category should have a diameter of approximately 1/2″ to 3/4″ and be broken into 8″ to 10″ lengths. Finally, large wood for our purposes is anything you can break by hand or foot. This typically includes branches and small logs up to approximately 1″ to 2″ in diameter. If you are packing an axe or saw, then you can go a little bigger. Try to keep the length of wood in the large category to around 12″. As you collect the wood for your campfire, create three piles. One pile for each size mentioned above. The amount of wood in the picture to the right will keep a campfire burning for approximately one hour.

In general, the higher priced tents are made with stronger fabric, stronger poles, and stronger stitching. They will withstand higher winds and heavier rain. They will last longer. A good tent can last for many years. However, not everyone needs this strength and durability. The milder and drier the climate, and the closer to home you camp, the more likely that a less expensive tent will be a very good bargain for you. If you are just starting out in your family camping adventures, and don’t know if you will really like camping, then you might want to stick with the least expensive tents. Many families do. It is very likely that you will try your first trips when the weather is warm and dry, and will probably keep close to civilization until you gain some experience and decide whether you like camping or not. You can always upgrade to a better tent later, and keep your original budget tent for when conditions allow. Read our article for more info about choosing a camping tent, its size, features and cost.

To experience the ultimate and comfortable camping, a camping car is absolutely necessary. The cars provide luxury in accommodation and the space for storage is ample. If you want to own a camping car or recreational vehicles you have to dish out a large sum depending upon the model and type of vehicle you intend to buy. They come at a price range of $10,000 to $100,000. The larger Class A category caravan will need a larger investment.

Since the camping trips take up a lot of your time you will not be able to take these trips frequently, as a result the camping vehicle will probably remain unused thereafter for a long time. Therefore, it is advisable that you rent the camping vehicle in place of buying such an expensive one. Renting is a better option as otherwise you will have a recurring expenditure towards maintaining the vehicle even if it is not in running. Camping experience can be an experience of a lifetime but one need not purchase a camping car for it. However if you are on vacation for a long time then RV is the cheaper option in terms of transportation and accommodation.

You can take on rent the camping car in order to experience the RV camping. It becomes an affordable option that solves your problems of accommodation while traveling. When you have decided to go on a trip you have to first rent a camping car. Then find out a travel company that will provide the rental of an RV. If you search the internet you will have the links to such companies. Some companies offer a partial sale of an RV. This means that for the specific period of ownership you will be responsible for the maintenance of the vehicle.

Clothing is particularly important during the winter. Whether staying at the campsite or venturing out for a hike, it is important to maintain your body temperature and avoid ill effects of cold weather such as hypothermia. Always wear a hat. Up to eighty percent of your body heat can be lost through your head, so wearing a hat is essential. Dress in layers. Wear several layers of clothing and choose outer clothing that is waterproof. Wear warm, wool socks. Wearing two pairs of socks is advisable for warmth and comfort. Always wear boots that are suited to cold weather and are waterproof. Keeping your feet warm and dry is critical for warding off hypothermia.

Make sure you have a warm fire at your campsite and that tents or sleeping arrangements are properly insulated from the cold. Choose sleeping bags and sleeping mats that are waterproof and have warm linings. Make sure you get into the sleeping bag already warm and dry. Do some exercises and warm up by the fire before entering your tent and going to sleep. If you have wet clothing on, change out of it and only sleep in dry clothes.

You will be less hungry in the winter but do not neglect nutrition. It will help keep your energy level up. Warm drinks will help. Cup of soup or canned soups are great for adding nutrition and warmth to the diet. Stay away from coffee, tea and alcohol if you are feeling the effects of hypothermia as they will thin the blood and actually advance symptoms.

Be prepared for emergencies. It is not uncommon to have a sudden drastic shift in weather leaving you stranded and unable to return to your campsite. It is also possible to have an accident such as slipping on a slippery slope or having a fall through the ice into freezing water. Being prepared for such disasters may mean the difference between life and death. Always have waterproof matches, food and water supplies, blankets, and first aid kits available.

Taking some time to plan and prepare for camping in the winter is essential for staying safe and making the most of your experience. Make sure you have items to stay warm and nourished. Plan for the unexpected and have gear available in case of emergency.
